I was reading about machiya townhouses and minka farmhouses. Do you know of more resources on Japanese traditional and vernacular architecture, especially concerning thermal management and ventilation?

My go-to is Kazuo Nishi & Kazuo Hozumi's What is Japanese Architecture? A survey of traditional Japanese architecture, which has stuff on minka but not (that I could find in the index) machiya. Kodansha Internationa, 1983, ISBN 4-7700-1992-0.

Japanese Homes and Their Surroundings by Edward Morse is incredible for this, but it's older and hoo boy is there some "western imperialist" (read: racist) commentary alongside the beautiful and informative diagrams so definitely approach it forewarned.
