Suggestions for intro music for tabletop fantasy roleplaying
April 25, 2019 8:26 AM

I need an intro song for a private tabletop RPG campaign I'm going to run for my friends. It's kinda bleak fantasy in a northern European type setting, so the style and instruments used should reflect that. Ideally, because of the name of the setting, ravens should be part of the song.

My candidates thus far is Berserkir by Danheim, but that's also used for the Mud & Blood RPG podcast which might carry associations for some of the players. Second choice atm is Sverker by Corvus Corax. But sadly, none of them have ravens! Do you know of any candidates? Yeah, and I'd strongly prefer bands not connected to white supremacy/the identitarian movement or any such nonsense.

Take a look at Heilung: one example being this track. They don't sing in English, though.

The lyrics don't matter all that much, unless they're understandable and about something that clashes with the setting. I'm Norwegian, btw.

I don't have ravens for you. I have wanted to use VNV Nations Pro Victoria as an intro to a military themed campaign.

Perhaps not what you're looking for, but I'll take any opportunity to plug Tabletop Audio as a great resource for these sorts of things.

It sounds like you're looking for something a bit more musical for the introduction though.

Twa Corbies, if Three Ravens is too cheerful. Plenty of versions written or recorded in the last two-four hundred years.

There are metal·covers as well as the more·spare·versions·of the·original and transition to metal. ( The duo called Twa Corbies does solid early northern European, but I can't find a recording of them singing Twa Corbies.)

Unearthed, by ES Posthumus, contains several tracks that I think are great introductory or background music to fantasy roleplaying sessions.

Back in the day, I had a DM/ GM that liked to play Gregorian Chants. There a lots on youtube now, but I remember him putting in CDs.

Any song can become a raven song when you add raven sounds.
