Short story about Hurricane Katrina?

I have a vague recollection of a short story or possibly narrative non-fiction set during a disaster (I think hurricane Katrina). What is it?

As I recall the plot, a father is forced to take responsibility for his young daughter after the daughter’s mom is taken into detention (for some reason). He does so and they have various adventures set amid the disaster, including a heart-wrenching reunion with the mother. At the end, the guy decides to leave with his girlfriend for California (nominally for just a week or two) and leaves his child behind with his therapist, who tries hard to warn him out of the trip.

I feel like I listened to the story as a podcast, though it’s possible I in fact read it in print form. I also feel pretty confident that I read the story in the last year — maybe just the last few months.

Some quick googling hasn’t turned up anything — any guesses?

Probably not answering the question: 'Stay Down and Take It' by Ben Marcus (New Yorker May 28, 2018) an odd short story about a couple driving away from the coast looking for a motel in Hurricane season.

The plot described sounds familiar, but I can't quite place it.

Response by poster: That's not it, but thanks for the attempt!
