Kids Birthday Cakes

NYC area (upper west side and morningside heights, really) question: good birthday cakes for kids. Where?
I am looking for recommendations for kids birthday cakes in NYC (please let me know of places you have tried yourselves or have heard positive things about). Fancy decorations are not necessary, but we would like them to be very tasty! Last year I went with www.flourgirlbakery.com which rules in the cuteness part but really the cakes are not at all what we like (too thick, too sweet, not enough chocolate, we most certainly dislike buttercream filling.)
I doubt you can convince me to make my own, as I am truly a hopeless baker...

There was a place on Amsterdam between 72nd and 79th, on the east side of the street - I think it was just north of the funeral home - that had fabulous giant cupcakes. They made regular cakes to order, too.
Ah, here it is, "Crumbs," 321 Amsterdam Ave. at 75th, 212-712-9800. Internet folks have savaged the place for the cake part of the cupcake being too dry. I remember that I liked that about them; they were dry and cocoa-y, they weren't oil-soaked sponges in danger of bursting into flame if exposed to sparks.

Cold Stone Creamery makes some amazing ice cream cakes. There's a ton of New York area locations, and they have some awesome customized and pre-made cakes in some TASTY varieties.

I'm sure you've already considered it, but when I lived in NYC, I loved The Hungarian Pastry Shop. Also featuring the best geopolitical coffeehouse graffiti of 2003.

Might I suggest Confetti Cakes? She did my wedding cake, so I can attest to the cake's extreme tastiness (very important to my husband and me.) She also does incredible special occasion cakes, all displayed on the site.

Response by poster: Eater and BitterOld, I know the places you are suggesting but did not think of asking there for birthday cakes! Good ones, indeed.
ikkyu2, I did not know "Crumbs". I think I am going there anyway, sounds too good!
Ice cream cakes... I had not thought of that. Maybe I could even avoid the too much sugar stuff, there. Thanks, charm!
shinyj, it's interesting, but Confetti cakes is housed in the same building as the flourgirl and they have very similar ideas... Hm....
Thanks, kids. My little ones thank you too!

Response by poster: Thank you all for your advice. The party went quite well, that is what the others say, because as the hostess I could not really know. We ordered one cake from Crumbs and one from Silver Moon. They were both great, not very sweet and with tons of chocolate.
Cheers!
