Forgotten book title

I am trying to remember the name of this philosophical short story I once read. If I recall correctly, it starts with a character with zero senses. Eventually he is born into a new world where he has a sense of touch and is piled on top of others just like him and can only feel their bodies. I believe that he slowly advances, gaining hearing and eventually sight. Does this ring a bell at all?

Flatland sorta hits this, except instead of senses, the characters perceive higher dimensions.

your description evokes (but does not really match) an impression retained from Ray Bradbury's "Tomorrow's Child" story from the "I Sing the Body Electric" collection, read 30 or so years ago.
