I want my mind (musically) blown.

NYC Filter- After watching this incredible choir performance of not only the thunderstorm but the following song as well, I would love to see something like this in person.

Previous to watching this performance, the thought of watching a choir never had any appeal to me. But if I could find a performance with relatively modern music and outstanding performances as seen above, I would really enjoy the experience.

However, I've searched through the choirs here in NY and haven't been able to find anything similar. I'd also be interested in any other performances that may fall in a similar genre, that would also be hard to locate without specifically knowing about them. Metallica performing with a full orchestra (S&M) as an over-the-top example.

Does anyone know of any that might be performing anytime soon? Does this even exist here or is the Angel City Chorale group a unique experience?

Thanks!

Have you checked out Roomful of Teeth?
They are pretty mindblowing, I think, although maybe in a totally different way. Here's a Tiny Desk Concert.

This doesn't fall into quite the same category as the choir, but Jacob Collier's work is pretty jaw-dropping. Here's his a capella version of 'Georgia On My Mind.' And his 'I Harm U' series (where fans send him video clips and he does harmonies to their vocals) is a lot of fun.

His ability to build complex harmonic arrangements is amazing. And he does a pretty wild one-man show using loopers and somehow pulls off a full band.

Not sure if you can see them live, but I love the PS22 Chorus. Just Dance is the most popular video. The kids are adorable.

This performance of "Lo, How a Rose Ere Blooming" recorded inside a 65-foot tall steel water tower.

The chorus that I sing with is currently rehearsing this arrangement of Africa, so it's not particularly unique. I can guarantee that there are probably a couple of dozen choruses in and around NYC performing at this level of accomplishment or better.

What makes your question difficult is not about the quality of the chorus , it's more about the selection of music for any particular choral concert. The linked video is a novelty arrangement of a pop song which is maybe 3 minutes of an hour-long concert. The rest of the program may have a variety of other types of music that you may or may not find equally mind-blowing. And you may not be able to know exactly what is in the program until you show up at the concert. The concert promotion will probably indicate if the chorus is performing a "major work" but a concert consisting of short pieces like Africa will probably not have the whole program listing available to you in advance.

But this is a really great thing for you to explore! Colleges and community colleges often have excellent choral groups that give public concerts, even some high schools have outstanding choruses. Community choruses have varying levels of quality but some (like Angel City) are very good. I'd check out your nearest good-size school's website for their performing arts programs and go see a few shows. It's usually super affordable.

Here's are some choral performances that have blown my musical mind:

Eric Whitacre's Lux Arumque
Moses Hogan's Elijah Rock
Shawn Kirchner's Wana Baraka

Thirding Roomful of Teeth; I saw them at the Park Avenue Armory's Recital Series in 2016 and it blew my tiny mind.

Also, Lincoln Center's annual white light festival always brings some incredible choirs to town. I could run down easily a half dozen amazing choral concerts I've had since 2010.

I would also suggest checking out Choral Festivals or competitions.

The New York Choral Consortium maintains a handy calendar of concerts by member choirs.
