What can employers ask about you when they check your background prior to offering you a job, or as a condition of employment? Whether you are an employer checking an applicant's references or a candidate who wants to know what questions are asked during a reference check, there are standard questions that are typically used to check out prospective employees.

This will vary from country to country, and, in the USA, from state to state. Wikipedia has a useful article on the subject.

I've checked a lot of references and here are some of the questions that I typically asked:

In what capacity did you work with the employee?

Employee says they worked there from [ date] to [date], is that correct?

Employee said their job title/description was [job title/description], is that correct?

Employee said their job duties were [job duties], is that correct?

What are the employee's strengths?

What are the employee's weaknesses?

Would you rehire this employee?

Is there anything else we should know?

This was in the library field, for various state and municipal government entities in the United States, in case it matters.
