Help Me Identify this Plant...
January 24, 2006 7:59 PM

Plant Identification filter. Can anyone give me a name for the plant pictured here and here?

If it helps in the ID, the pictures were shot in the greenhouse of the Selby Botanical Gardens in Sarasota, Florida.

Do you have any other pictures, perhaps that show some plant parts or flower parts other than just stamens? Or at least a description?

Don't public greenhouses usually label their exhibits?

If you're far away from the botanical garden now, querying them by email might be the best way to find out.

If you can get pictures of the leaves, stems and body of the plant this would be a lot easier, as is it may be impossible to identify it with the pictures you've got.

To me it looks like a fuchsia, upside down.

That's all I've got in terms of pictures, sorry. I did indeed send them an email, but I've no way of knowing how good they are about replying.

Heh - you've done something similar to me; I saw a flower, thought "What's that?" and took a photo... with a nice artistic depth of field, and quite close up - missing out the shape of the plant, or the leaves...

Makes for a nice photo, but not much use for identification purposes.

Perhaps try some of the Flickr flower groups, or maybe "ID please"?

One thing that does spring to mind, that greenhouse at Selby Gardens is where they display a lot of Bromeliads and Epiphytes. I don't know if that helps narrow anything down.

I think it's a Quince flower that has had all of the petals drop off. The stamen in your photos are a bit dried out, the way they would be at the point where the petals fall off of a flower.

Garden Web came up with what looks like a winner. Haemanthus Abiflos. Thanks!
