Help me identify this band that surfaced a couple years ago
October 6, 2017 8:14 AM

I was recently reminded of a band (indie maybe?) that gained some prominence a couple of years ago. They had something of an orchestral emo sound. The one popular song I remember had two videos: one was set at a beachfront carnival -- maybe with a mixture of color and B&W? The other was alive performance that I want to say was in a church. Help?

The World Is a Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid to Die ?

-is fairly recent
-definitely could be described as an "orchestral emo sound"
-definitely has a video of a live performance in a church (or building with church-like stained glass, at least); also, here's another one

-I haven't found a beachfront carnival video, though...

Beirut's "Elephant Gun" sounds like that and the video has a beach and a carnival-ish party. Somehow I doubt that's it though.

Was it for sure not My Chemical Romance? The first video sounds like it could be either Welcome to the Black Parade or maybe a misremembered The Ghost of You, and the church one sounds like it could be Helena.

Is it Tindersticks' Lucinda?

(if it's not, it should be, because it is great.)

Could be Future Islands with Seasons. It lines up vaguely enough with most of the details, and the Letterman set looks a little like a church.

Or maybe Emily Haines & The Soft Skeleton -- Our Hell ?

Or Carolina Liar? They definitely could fit the description.
Show Me What I'm Looking For was shot beachfront in front of the Santa Monica Pier.
I'm Not Over is a "live" concert venue.

Could it have been one of the chapel sessions from I Am Fuel, You Are Friends? These performances go back several years, but maybe--?

I suggest checking out some of the Other Voices videos, as many of the live gigs take place in a church.
