Hotel recommendations on Monterey Bay

Simple travel query: looking for recommendations for a nice coastal hotel somewhere on Monterey Bay.

Main desiderate: a bay view and relatively more rustic location or proximity to beachfront. Prefer non-chain, boutique/small, Carmel, Seaside, or Marina, not right in Monterey, run by nice people. Not looking for spa/resort, probably not for a B&B, just a room with a view and in proximity to a beach. Fancy is fine. Thanks in advance! As always, a recommendation based on personal experience is particularly welcome.

La Playa Carmel. Haven't been there recently, but I remember it being really nice.

I've heard really good things about the Portola Hotel, which is in downtown Monterey and super close to the Wharf.

Best answer: My wife and I love going to Asilomar. It might be what you're looking for. Definitely try to get one of the older rooms and not one in one of the newer buildings. The great hall is a lovely place to hang out. And the location if very close to Monterey for having a nice dinner, etc.

It's not all that obvious from the site so let me expand - Asilomar is a YWCA leadership camp built in 1913 that's right next to a lovely beach just outside of Monterey & Seaside. Many of the buildings are wonderful wooden arts & crafts style residences and there's a gorgeous great hall in the middle of it all.

Borg's! It is somewhat basic and no frills but we had a great night there, walked up to the aquarium the next day. I swam right across the street from the motel, and lots of seals were hanging out the next morning.

My wife and I stayed at the Martine Inn when we went up for our anniversary last year and were very happy with it. It is a B&B, so maybe not perfectly what you wanted, but it's right on the water and Monterey and Pacific Grove are both walkable from there.
