Good ol' fashioned rock/indie/punk bars & club in New York City??

See, I don't mind spending a bit of $$$ to see my favorite bands at Terminal 5 or The Beacon Theater... okay fine, maybe I do mind a little, so I'm searching for smaller clubs, cheaper tickets, places with some good indie rock/punk stuff going on. It looks like a lot of places in Manhattan shut down recently but considering I live up in Washington Heights some Manhattan recommendations would be welcome!

I used to go to The Knitting Factory in Brooklyn for that sort of thing! I haven't been in years because I'm upstate now, so I can't remark as to their variety right now, and also you were looking for Brooklyn, not Manhattan, buuuuuut....I always liked going there.

Are you only looking for clubs in Manhattan? That might be tough--I think most punk/indie clubs are in Brooklyn these days (and there are a bunch; my personal favorite is Silent Barn in Bushwick, shows there are usually around $8.) If I were you I'd go to ohmyrockness.com and check out the venues listed there: it's pretty comprehensive.

Yes to ohmyrockness, also, check out Arlene's Grocery, though that may not be indie or punk by strictest definition.

Maybe not exactly what you are looking for, but Saint Vitus or Le Poisson Rouge

Lit, if that still exists.

Best answer: The promoters that book Terminal 5 also book The Bowery Ballroom (600 capacity) and the Mercury Lounge (250 capacity). I've been to the Ballroom a few times and know indie/punk acts that have played the Mercury. I think you should check out their calendars.

And a quick poke at ohmyrockness suggests that The Bowery Electric might also have some stuff you'll want to see.

Best answer: specifically for indie or punk: silent barn, shea stadium, sunnyvale, warsaw, brooklyn steel (believe this is owned by the bowery ballroom people), st vitus (more metal but some punk). there are some bigger ticket indie bands that play in manhattan at webster hall or bowery ballroom but most everything in the $15-and-under set is really going to be in north brooklyn around williamsburg or bushwick.
