Performance fabric by the yard

Awesome fabric for making leggings and workout tights. But with requirements...

After being frustrated with all of the workout tights, I'm going to make my own. My issue is that I need performance fabric/supplex/dri-fit fabric by the yard. All of my usual sites (fabric.com and similar) are geared towards everyday clothing so their workout fabric leaves a lot to be desired. Joann's selection is also not very inspiring and kind of see through.

I want black fabric for tights, and crazy prints for accents from websites that you've ordered from and know to have quality fabric. The fabric has to be moisture wicking tho and I need to be able to see the weight of the fabric to make sure it will work for tights. Bonus points if you know of a site where I can get 12oz black bamboo spandex. Hope me please!

Best answer: Spandexhouse.com or spandexworld.com. Both have websites you can order samples from, both have every kind of stretch fabric you can imagine, including crazy prints.

Yeah came in to say Spandexhouse.com . . . Mood also has performance fabrics and I've had a lot of luck with ordering from them - the quality is good and you can order swatches. I'd order a lot of swatches.

I guess I should mention that they specialize in performance knits, and costumers for dance companies and professional figure skaters source a lot of their stuff there. Not sure if they have all of their prints online, but in person it's a bit overwhelming how many different patterns they have to choose from, literally thousands.
They're pretty helpful, too, so you could also call them and ask them about what it is you're looking for.

Seattle Fabrics concentrates on *very* sturdy fabric, but I've fondled some legging-suitable stretch material while there. If you want something even sturdier than dancers' leggings, check them out. (Not a prints kind of place, though.)

Also, Rose City Textiles has lots of great spandex fabrics. not the flashy colors, but good technical stuff. Unfortunately, they are closing up shop so I'm not sure how long they'll be around.

I was going to suggest fabricline (Rose City) too. That's a bummer they are closing shop, they are a favorite of mad scientist back country folks everywhere.

I was just at the retail store in NYC for spandexhouse and they definitely had some nice opaque fabric and tons of crazy prints.

So Sew English is a small business that buys up remnants and overstocks and full bolts. Great customer service but currently has a 30day turnaround. I have ordered from them and I feel their quality is great.
Zenith and Quasar. Another small business but specializes in geeky and science prints. Usually carries a larger range of "basics" so you will want to email them to find out what the timeline is for their restockings. Will send out a small packet of swatches!

A few more that I have been pleased with and have purchased from and will again..
Koshtex. Fast service.
Denver Fabrics. Delivery can be slow (sometimes I get things in 5 days, sometimes 2 weeks). Huge selection, good prices and constant sales and constantly changing stock but usually huge volumes. They merged with Fashion Fabrics Club awhile ago and I really don't understand why they have two identical sites and not just one!
Fabric Mart. Small selection but excellent prices and constantly changing stock. I would use them for fun pieces of activewear. Delivery can be slow.
