Where do you live? Where (house, garden, pubes) did you find the little guy?

It looks like a rove beetle.

Response by poster: Live in Southern California near the beach. It was inside the house. Wanted to make sure it wasn't some kind of termite or carpenter ant or something else that may eat our house out from under us.

Harmless.
Wikipedia says many live on the shore (I had no idea).

Best answer: Termite? Rove beetles tend to have pointy butts.

Best answer: I think that is a termite.

Everybody in CA has termites but you probably ought to have someone out to take a look if it's been a while since your house was fumigated. Some of them - the ground kind I think - can do a lot of harm quickly, while the other kind (wood?) take a long time and are basically contained by every ten year fumigation.
