Adapting Angelina Jolie's bungee-cord-aerial-dance-thingy in Tomb Raider
October 29, 2016 5:09 AM
In the Tomb Raider movie, Angelina Jolie has a bungee dance scene, where she's wearing a hip harness attached to two bungee cords in the ceiling and doing flips through the air. If someone wanted to do the same thing in their home, would it be possible (assuming you had the ceilings for it). How would you go about doing that? What's the required equipment, and how do you learn how to use it? (And what's this thing called? I'm finding a *little* under 'bungee dance' but not much...)
Assuming you have a really high ceiling find a qualified rigger to do the install. It could be a simple bolt but there are different stresses than carpenters/roofers plan for and rigging failure really sucks. The correct reinforcement and the right hardware installed correctly are just really essential. But sure would be great fun!

Are you asking about the bungee part, or the harness? It looks like the kind of thing I've seen Cirque d'Soleil aerialists use, so maybe "circus aerialist equipment" might be a place to start.

If you're in a big city you might have a place that offers lessons in circus arts. That would be the place to learn how to do this.

Most circus arts places will have bungee dance classes. It's a bit different than the double line, but it's a place to start. I would start by taking those classes, along with a conditioning and strength-building class geared towards acrobatics.
There are workshops you can take from companies like Bandaloop to really hone your skills.
I would also not recommend you have this set this up in your home without significant experience in harness in a gym with a spotter. If you aren't sure what equipment you need, you're probably not ready to install and use it alone :)
Warnings aside, arial dance is really fun, and if you can find a place to take classes you might find yourself getting hooked quick :)

In gymnastics and diving, these are called spotting rigs or trampoline spotting rigs. They're a pretty common training tool.

Other related search terms to find classes: circus arts, aerial arts, aerial silks, bungee ballet, tumbling and trampoline, adult gymnastics.
A mall near me has a version you can bounce on for $11, and there's a tramp gym with adult rec for like $20 for two hours that has a pretty sweet one.
