Reset android chrome external protocol handlers

How do I change Chrome's external protocol handlers on my phone?
A long time ago Chrome on my Nexus 5X (running Android 7.0) asked whether to open an external app for a link, with an option box "Always do this". Unfortunately I checked the "Always" box and now wish I hadn't. How can I reset the option back to "ask me"?
On Android Chrome settings don't include external protocol handlers.
I'm ready to use direct editing of a config file, if that's what it takes, if someone knows the file name and location.
More detail: while browsing in an incognito window, where a link opens another instance of Chrome the new instance opens in non-incognito mode. I want the link to ask me what to do, which it did until I checked the "Always do this" option.
