Fixing botched engraving

Is it possible to "erase" botched engravings on pewter? I know pewter's soft, and was wondering if the area can be made as it was before. It's a lidded stein used as a golf trophy. The man that was doing the previous engravings (by hand) retired. Thanks!

(no other nibbles, so) I don't see why not. A jeweler should be able to hammer it out. Or maybe engravers can even "erase" their mistakes and we just never see it, but I would doubt it. Theirs is a pretty specialized (narrow) skill.

Why not call an engraver (pick one out of a phone book), explain the situation, and ask what they would suggest?
