Help me figure this out, please.

I'm trying to locate a children's short story with an ending where this boy that lives in this town, illegally goes over a fence (maybe he was even shot) and the last thing he sees is a sign saying "Human Exhibit".
There was this archived post, but the answer at the bottom isn't the right one.
I've been looking for this story (like the poster there) since the 4th grade. That's 37 years! I really want to find this before I die. lol!

"human exhibit" is a popular thing in mid-century sci-fi. twilight zone did at least one episode on it (people are alike all over) and i have read at least 2 stories that featured it.
escape from the pipe men is not what you're looking for, but includes people in an alien zoo.
unsurprisingly there are sites that talk about the human zoo, but nothing i could find matches what you're describing.
