Live Chats That Are Responsive, Wide-Ranging, and Intelligent

Is there a live chat anywhere where one can ask wide-ranging questions and elicit intelligent response in real time? MeFi Chat seems more conversational; I've tried crashing in to ask for help when stuck for a word or a fact (fleeting issues not worth posting to AskMeFi), but always feel a bit...crashy. I'm looking for a place where folks blast in and out with hot questions/issues. Paywalled chats (hey, anything to help filter out ditzy noise) would be fine.

Some of the Stack Exchange sites have active chat rooms. Varies much by site.

Twitter is very good for this if you have the right sort of people following you. You still have to contribute something to get people to follow you, but you don't have to do it right before you need to answer a question.

I can't tell if you are looking for answers to questions, or just people to have discussion with. Metafilter offers both.

However, when I read your title I immediately thought - that's what I do! I'm a librarian and for my institution I am available for chat to answer work related information need questions. So in case you haven't thought about it, maybe a local library has a chat service where you can interact with staff to find answers?

I don't know which server, but the method you're looking for is IRC or Internet Relay Chat.

Response by poster: Gor-ella: great, so I'll just PM you from now on! :)

I live in a blanded-out suburb full of dead-eyed kids. The library staff's helpful, but to say they're out of synch with my interests and issues would be putting it mildly.

flimflam: I've been using IRC since before the Web. If there's a general interest one devoted to fielding people's petty questions and issues (e.g. need help thinking of a word), I don't know about it. I agree they're good for highly specific questions (about sailing or chess or javascript).
