Contemporary, American Gertrude Jekyll?

I need to learn something about landscape gardening. I'd like to find modern, American garden writers who lean toward, update, and localise the philosophy of Gertrude Jekyll and William Robinson - i.e. the use of hardy, perennial native plants to create persistent, low water use, naturalistic landscapes. Who should I be reading?

In Toronto, (so applicable to Northeastern US), I relie on Marjorie Harris, and for all of Canada I use Lois Hole's books.

It depends on where you live, but Lauren Springer for the Southwest (mountain and desert).
