deliver me

I have a friend that lives in Phoenix that has a birthday coming up. I don't know if they'll be home and I'm not even in the same country right now, but I want to get them something. Is there like a bakery (or something) that I could pay over the Internet, and they would deliver donuts (or something), and if no one was home they'd just leave it on the doorstep? Or something similar to that?

Holding back from the urge to crack wise at your username, there are a number of delivery places that do this sort of thing.

Places such as FTD and 1-800-FLOWERS offer flower delivery service just about anywhere.

FunCarePackages seems to offer birthday cake, balloon, flower, and other types of delivery throughout the US with a day or two notice as well. Seems like exactly what you're looking for.

Call a couple local bakeries and ask them. Ask them if any of their employees might be willing to make a local delivery after work for $20.

In which part of town do they live? We might be able to recommend something for a particular neighborhood.

Without knowing that, I would use kdern's suggestion. Rainbow Donuts are pretty damn good, and a Valley staple.

Christmas tamales are a southwestern favorite. Folks usually buy them by the dozen. Don't know how well they'd keep on a doorstep though.

Response by poster: Saydur, thanks for the links. 40+ bucks for some cookies is out of my range though. I'm thinking smaller - $10-$20, and hopefully a local service.

For instance, when I was in high-school there was a local donut shop that also made subs and pizzas and so it delivered. What I was looking for was Phoenixites who maybe knew similar places in town. i said 'or something' because ideas like ldenneau's tamales were a cool idea too. But more important is a local place that will deliver and be willing to let me pay with a Visa card over the phone. (So, hey, if you know a Christmas tamale delivery place!)

Addyct, on "12th" I believe.

Well, on twelfth street in Phoenix, is Carolina's. They have some of the best tortillas in Phoenix.

Los Sombreros Café & Cantina in Scottsdale sells tamales for $26 per dozen and I believe they ship or deliver.

Almost any gift site will send stuff out. Have them send it by FedEx, with an OK to leave on the doorstep without signature.

UPS has the same service in theory, but it's the option of the driver whether to honor the request to leave a package, so you can't be sure.
