Neat place to stay between DC and Winterthur?

We want to stop overnight somewhere around Winterthur, so we can wake up, drive to the museum, see the gardens, and head back to the City. What towns along the way are worth staying in? Any notable hotels or B&B's? We're driving back from DC to NYC around June 22.

Best answer: How fancy do you want? There is a nice looking place very close to Winterthur called Inn at Montchanin Village. But maybe it is too fancy for kids. I've never stayed there myself, because a. I live here and b. it is out of my price range.

There are also some hotels near Chadds Ford, PA, which is a nice area, or there are several chain hotels on 202 in north Wilmington. That area is just bland suburbs but it is close to Winterthur and not far from I95.

I'm pretty sure there are also some B&Bs on route 52 north of Winterthur but I don't know anything about them.

Oh, I forgot the Mendenhall Inn. That looks nice but I've only been there for weddings and events.

There's also the Fairville Inn in Chadds Ford, Pa. right on the border. That's where we stayed when we did Winterthur a couple years ago and we loved it. For dinner, a couple miles down the road is the highly recommended Buckley's Tavern.
