Help me find a way to do this packaging item?

I am trying to design a part of a package for a bottle. Basically, once you open the box, you find the bottle resting on a dock (or a tray if you will), much like how the iPhone rests on a plastic tray once you open the box.
What I'm looking for is a cardboard version of this podium-like tray where the cube glass bottle can rest on securely. It has to be feasible and non-complex. If you have any resources for packaging ideas (or examples) for this type of thing, it'd be great!

Must it have a flat, continuous surface?
If not, a simple way to do this would be to make a set of interlocking cardboard pieces with notches cut out to nest the bottle.

Check out Ecovative's mushroom packaging, made out of mycelium - I've played with the mixture before and it's actually pretty simple.

Response by poster: I'm pretty much looking for a cardboard replacement. All of these materials that you've mentioned are wonderful and I have so many ideas for them already but I'm thinking of a simple solution with cardboard...

Here's what you do:
Get a box and a whole bunch of corrugated cardboard. Turn them into a bunch of sheets of cardboard that perfectly fit vertically in the box so that you can't fit any more in and the box shuts when it is closed. So now you have a box that is 100% full of cardboard that when opened, looks like this: ||||||||||||||. Remove a cube glass bottle shaped section by removing, cutting, and replacing 1-2 slices at a time. Done!
If you want it to look fancy, you could put a sheet of fabric over the top and tuck it in at the corners.

If you're really set on doing this with cardboard, however, then the best way is the way they make cardboard egg cartons.
