What's my name?
November 15, 2014 8:07 AM   Subscribe

This young gentleman will be joining my family of two other cats later today. I'm at a loss for names.

I've seen some great suggestion threads before. I'm of the belief that cats deserve people names. Send me your favorite boy cat names please!

(It might help if you post your other cats' names, too. It's nice when family names all sound nice together, I think, and would probably help us get a feel for what sorts of names you like.)

Response by poster: His new siblings are named Tobias (Toby) and Laurie. And Annabelle is out as she was with me up til a couple of years ago. As you can see, I like kind of older-sounding names.

He looks remarkably like my (human) friend Alisdair. So you should name him Alisdair.

Bryn.

He looks a bit Siamese, so I thought Siamese => King of Siam => Yul Brynner => Bryn.

If he does have Siamese or Burmese heritage, he may be a bit vocal, so having the same name as a famous Welsh baritone wouldn't hurt.

I love the smoky blaze on the face, so I suggest Dimka, which I have been told is Russian for 'smoke' from a cat lady with a Dimka. Cute name for a kitty, methinks.

He looks similar to a friend's cat named Walter W. Whiskers.

Personally, I'd call him Dog. This is probably why I don't have any pets.

You've already gotten some great suggestions. I've always been partial to the name Simon myself. The imaginary relationship I had in my own head throughout my early 20's was with a Simon. hehe.

Have you considered just hanging out with the cat for a few days and see if a name just "comes" to you? Whether it's a real name/word or not? I have a pet name for my SO that isn't a real name... It's not even a real word in any language I know of. People think it's an italian pet name, when in fact I just completely made up the word one day. But the syllables perfectly embodied how adorable I felt this person was and I still use it to this day.

I'd just call him Sir. Then you can attach any additional names at a whim, as I do to my cat, so that she has 16 possible names and an ongoing identity crisis.

Best answer: What a striking gentleman. Charles? Victor? Or, you could take inspiration from US Presidents With Facial Hair. Ulysses? Rutherford? Taft?

After Laurie comes Professor Bhaer, I should think. Quite a gentleman, too.

(On the other hand, that face told me he's named Marcel. How is his je ne sais quoi? Perhaps Professor Marcel Bhaer for the full name, then.)

Whatever you choose (or he chooses for you!), enjoy the very handsome new addition to your family.

Please update once you've picked out a name for him! He's a very handsome fellow.

You might like to take a look at a list of Thai names --I like a lot of the male names. See if the meaning of one of them lines up with your young man?

(I also just have to say that the best cat name I've seen in a while went to a Siamese: Pad Kee Meow, a riff on pad kee mao, the Thai name for the best of Thai foods, drunken noodles.)

Response by poster: Oh, so many good names, and he didn't respond to any of them! It appears that his name is Henri, and he and one of my cats have been doing really well playing through the baby gate, so hopefully its a smooth transition into the family :)
