Rugged Apple-style earbuds
October 14, 2014 6:10 PM

The volume button on my iPhone earbuds just stopped working. Arg. I'd like to replace them with something more rugged.

If possible, I'd like the same form-factor as the default Apple earbuds. That is, an earbud that does NOT go in the ear canal, a straight (not L-shaped) headphone jack so it'll work with my phone case, and a three button mic. I've tried searching online, but I can't seem to find a rugged version of this specific combination.

Well, I don't know if I would call them "rugged", but Amazon's Fire Phone's earbuds have the same shape as Apple's and are, according to Gizmodo, better. And they're only $15.

The Firebuds' volume control doesn't work on Apple devices, though.

Sorry if this is a derail, but is there any chance you just need to clean out the headphone jack?

The lint issue that thejoshu pointed out seems the most likely, and to be honest, I've bought $150-$200 earbuds and none have lasted as long as the apple "earpods" earbuds.

Ah. So much for the Amazon earbuds. What about just buying new Apple earbuds from Best Buy and getting the product replacement plan (which is less than $10)? Not everyone has a good experience with it, but I've replaced my Apple earbuds through them a couple times with no problem at all.

Many of these are expensive but some get down to $40.

Literally every single one of those is in-ear, fyi. It's insanely difficult to find "Apple-style" earbuds these days - it seems most people vastly prefer in-ear, so companies don't care about catering to the minority who intensely hate and/or can't use them. Sony makes "apple-style" earbuds but I haven't seen any with a straight headphone jack, and I'm also not sure if they make a volume control - but I'd suggest looking through their catalogue. I haven't seen many other companies selling more than one model of non-in-ear earbuds - most don't sell any at all.

For what it's worth, my iPhone earbuds start dying every 4-6 months, but I've gotten them replaced for free every time (within my iPhone's warranty, of course). It's pretty hard to find on the Apple Support website, but they have a page for it. Start here.
