Trouble with iOS 8 Mail (iPhone 5S)

While I had no issues on my iPhone 4 with iOS 7 getting my desired functionality, I'm having a heck of a time trying to figure out how to replicate this functionality with my iPhone 5S and iOS 8. The main problem concerns the built-in Mail app.
My desired functionality is this:
- Use Gmail app for all mail (incoming and outgoing), don't want Mail to ever check my gmail account
- Ensure that I'm getting notified of new email via Gmail's app
- Be able to forward pictures and such via email (which I know tends to use the Mail app -- if I can do this via the Gmail app, I'd love to know how!)
Given that forwarding photos via email prompts me to use the Mail app, I put in my Gmail details.
Now I'm getting mail notifications in both my Gmail app and my Mail app...
How can I best only use the Mail app for outgoing photos (if, indeed, I can only use Mail and not Gmail for that) while having it simultaneously ignore any other mail? I was able to do this on my iPhone 4, but settings have changed somewhat in iOS 8 and I can't seem to find the magic combination of what I want.
Please note that I don't want to use another account's details in the Mail app. I just don't want Mail to ever check my email. Thanks for any help you can provide!

iOS 8 includes new sharing extensions that not many apps yet support. I imagine that a future update to the GMail app will let you send images from Photos with it... but it's not an option right now.
I'd just do as stopgap says and turn Mail notifications for that account off.
