Nature-filter: What is this (bird?) call?
August 10, 2014 8:07 PM   Subscribe

At my mother's house in central Indiana and she's been hearing this sound from the woods, all night, for several weeks. Who can identify this? http://clyp.it/rfyfb33n (@ 0:01 and 0:014)

Very much not a birding-by-ear expert, but try the fall vocalization link for the northern saw-whet owl, beginning at 00:16.

As other non-expert birder by ear, I agree. Northern saw-whet owl sounds about right.

I've also heard barn owls make a similar noise. Barn owls hiss more, though, rather squealing/hooting like the saw-whet.

Good luck!

It does sound like one of the whine-like calls. Thanks, all!
