Nature-filter: What is this (bird?) call?

At my mother's house in central Indiana and she's been hearing this sound from the woods, all night, for several weeks. Who can identify this? http://clyp.it/rfyfb33n (@ 0:01 and 0:014)

Best answer: Very much not a birding-by-ear expert, but try the fall vocalization link for the northern saw-whet owl, beginning at 00:16.

As other non-expert birder by ear, I agree. Northern saw-whet owl sounds about right.

I've also heard barn owls make a similar noise. Barn owls hiss more, though, rather squealing/hooting like the saw-whet.

Good luck!

Response by poster: It does sound like one of the whine-like calls. Thanks, all!
