Matchmaking for singers?

I'm an amateur singer in NYC. I've done a lot of choral singing and have taken a lot of voice lessons. I'd really like to be singing folk music or non-experimental jazz - acoustic music with zero to light instrumentation and tight harmonies - with small groups (2-8 people). I'm not sure how to make it happen and how these things work.

Are there websites or other resources to help me find what I'm looking for? Is there etiquette for this sort of thing? I sang with another woman at a workshop last week and we had fantastic vocal chemistry, but I didn't catch her name and have no way of following up and at the time I was afraid it would be weird if I was all "OMG that was fantastic and I'd love to sing with you outside of class."

In 2014 I'd like to make this happen. I've started going to meetups and workshops and open mics. I'm shy and that's definitely holding me back as well. I think a solid plan would help me power through the shyness. Hope me?

Best answer: Have you been down to the Jalopy in Red Hook? Your question made me think of it because of the folk signing. I know you said you are doing these things already, but they have classes, workshops, open mics, and shows. But, the reason I suggest it is that it might be more people interested in the same genre as you. Also, I've taken classes there, though not singing ones, and the instructor has always suggested stuff I'd otherwise not know about (jam sessions, events, resources, and now I'm on a mailing list for these things, too). It might be worth checking out, if you haven't already, even if it's just to meet potentially more like-minded folk and ask them for ideas. And perhaps there's a tear-off tab flyer hanging up for people looking to sing. Or you could make one?

Also, maybe posting/looking on Craigslist? This is how I know of most people finding bands to play in (which is different than what you are looking for, but might still be useful). I don't think it's easy, but it's not entirely fruitless.

Keep an eye out for vocal jazz groups holding auditions.

Response by poster: So far Jalopy has been fantastic - I will look into the other resources as well. Thanks!
