Jude Kelly's Othello

In 1997 Jude Kelly directed a production of Othello starring Patrick Stewart in the title role. Is a recording available?

I'm aware of the WAPAVA recording, but I'm nowhere near the DC area, and WAPAVA says they cannot circulate their recordings because of agreements with Actor's Equity. Is a recording available from any other source? I have access to interlibrary loan through a university.

I'm guessing trying to talk to Actor's Equity about an exception to their agreement with WAPAVA would be pointless, but if anyone has contacts with Equity I'm willing to try that route.

What does Worldcat display for you? I get a localized list, and it appears that the Pikes Peak Library District (in Colorado Springs, CO, not near you I realize, but also not near DC) might have it. Mind you, I can't log in, so I get an error which might be related to lack of access as a user, or lack of access to the resource in general.

As you have access to a university, is there a theater or arts department there, or with an associated university? They might have some connections to get you a copy of this recording.

Best answer: It doesn't look like you are near any of these... but, from the Actors' Equity website:
For educational and historical purposes, there are four national archives which maintain video libraries of shows: Theatre on Film and Tape Archive (TOFT)of the NY Public Library of the Performing Arts; Washington Area Performing Arts Video Archive; The Curtis Collection at the University of Pittsburgh; and the Museum of Performance and Design in San Francisco. Equity maintains agreements with these archives in order to ensure the security of these recordings.
So, if nothing else, you might have four places to go to and ask for guidance rather than just WAPAVA, so one of remaining three of might be more helpful at finding a solution. You also have potentially four places to visit, rather than just the one.

By 'security' one would guess they mean the risk of copying and distribution of recordings never intended for distribution and subject to strict convenants, like this one.

Given that there appear to be no copies circulating, which is frankly amazing these days, I think you might be fresh out of luck in terms of being able to get your hands on a physical copy outside the actual archive buildings themselves. If you take this Canadian university course, for example, the only materials they can access are still photos.

Response by poster: What does Worldcat display for you?

Miscategorized entries. For example, the entry for the nearest university to me is actually the Anthony Hopkins version. As far as I can tell this is true for every entry in Worldcat. Note that the Worldcat entry refers to the copy having been created for WAPAVA.

I suspect you are correct. Something to do the next time I'm in DC, maybe.

Best answer: In Worldcat if you click on "Show libraries holding just this edition" it will show only the Jude Kelly version instead of lumping two different versions together.

It looks like only the U. of Maryland has it in their UMCP Performing Arts Library which looks like it is related to WAPAVA so that's not helpful for you.
