Gifts from a "birdie"

My partner (m) and I (f) are celebrating our fifth-year anniversary this month. I am looking for inexpensive gift suggestions (or suggestions for romantic experiences) inspired by my pet name "birdie".

The partner is in his early-30s, and recently finished graduate school in musicology. We reside in Ottawa, Canada. We have no children together.

I have limited financial resources, so gifts should be no more than fifty dollars. Homemade gifts suggestions are welcomed, as are suggestions for intangible experiences.

I was going to suggest a copy of Bye Bye Birdie on Blu-ray, but it clocks in at just over $50.

Are you looking for home-decor-type things? Would a feeder or nesting box answer?

Best answer: Golf stuff (if he's into that)

or

A trip to a bird sanctuary, complete with picnic, binoculars as an optional tangible gift

or

A bird whistle (or a few different bird whistles) since he is interested in musicology.

If you're crafty, maybe build him a bower? Maybe a picture frame or something embellished with birdie things.

Best answer: If you look on etsy, you can find everything from key chains to salt and pepper shakers, lamps, bookends, finials, paintings, christmas ornaments.... the possibilities are endless, and well within your price range.

What about a bird feeder for winter enjoyment?

Or tickets to see a musician or band that he'd enjoy, and you could inscribe the card with something like, "To celebrate, we have tickets to hear your other favourite songbird! Love, Birdie"

How about making homemade bird feeders? A short trip to the woods to see fall foliage and to collect pine cones. Perhaps a stop for pie and hot chocolate, or hot apple cider, then back home to make the feeders.

It's a nice outing!

Perhaps a book?
Which can lead to a lovely way for a couple to spend an afternoon together.

So I have no idea what you might possibly make, but the cutest thing EVER would be to build him something out of little sticks and various other items in the style of a nest. If I have any insights about what this could be that wouldn't just be, well... a pile of sticks and random crap, I'll make sure to post them here!

Best answer: Kinder Surprise Eggs to go in that nest? With egg cosies to keep them warm?

A home-made quill pen?

A bird water whistle (or a dozen)? You half-fill them with water and blow into them; they make a pretty warbling sound.

Membership of Bird Studies Canada? $50 for household membership.

Bird cartoons! If you're really lucky you might be able to find a copy of Harry Hargreaves' It's a Bird's Life (or one of his other books about the Bird); or you could get a cartoon from the New Yorker.

Origami birds?
