what fell out of my dryer?

Two of these weird spring, chain looking thingies came out of my dryer today. Are they the things that keep everything from bursting into flames? Thanks ever so much!

That looks like it came out of a corset. Maybe from a previous tenant?

Well, that depends. Did you put someone's corset through the washer and dryer? If so, yes, everything may burst into flames when they find out about it.

What make and model of dryer is it ? Did you find them inside the tumbler itself, or did they fall out of the bottom of the frame ?

They're more likely to do with keeping things from rattling or vibrating, rather than having to do with temperature control or protection.

Did this happen while the dryer was running ? Is it making any unusual noises now ?

That's spiral spring steel boning, often used in corsets and in other heavy-duty garment applications.

Almost 100% guaranteed those are part of something that was dried at some point, and not mechanical.

Definitely a spring corset stay. You can se something similar here. It doesn't mean that you had to have washed a corset per se. If you washed a bustier, long-line bra, or dress with a fitted bodice you may want to check it to see if it has small channels that are missing their supports.

Pictures of corset bones and dimensions here. Is it the same width as one of those?

I had those in my roller derby knee gaskets, too, for what that's worth.

Best answer: Those also get used in ortho braces for wrists and ankles. I've had more than a few in hand braces over the years.

Response by poster: Hey, yeah! My boyfriend splits wood on a ranch and got a nasty case of poison oak. He had to wash everything he wears, including...his back brace!

That was it!

Thanks y'all!
