Replacing laptop speakers

My laptop speakers are terrible. Can I replace them? It's an Acer TravelMate 4400.

Uh... you're better off getting an external set and hook them into the audio-out (earphone) jack.

It'll really depend on where and what you use your laptop for (and when you want audio from them) to determine what you want to get.

I got a 2.1 set of Altec Lansigs 6 years ago that are still doing their job (music from laptop at the lab). $200 6 years ago and outputing louder and at a higher quality and with less distortion than all the other Mac people (some with overprices Apple speakers) is something I take for granted.

It's a pain in the ass for travelling, but then, I just plug in earbudds/phones.

It really depends on what you want, and what you want to spend.

With such small speakers, you won't get any better sound out them even with more expensive speakers... Beside it will be pain to take laptop apart and custom fit your new speakers...

However as suggested, external speakers are excellent choice.

However, I can't believe you didn't already thought of that if you just wanted to use at home or occationally during travel.

I assume you want to be as portable as possible.

There are very small portable speakers that will do the job.
Check out some of speakers for various mp3 players.

I guess you can glue on or attach those speakers on the laptop itself...if you can find something that will go well with your laptop.

Important thing is that you will want some sort of usb powered amp type speakers to be truly portable and amplified for better sound.

Why not get some expensive earbuds?

It's unlikely that you can find any sort of speakers that will sound decent in a laptop. There just isn't the space for anything but a tiny little driver (which will sound tinny). Headphones or external speakers of various flavours are really the only things you can do.

I have an IBM R51 with nearly inaudiable sound from the speakers. My son has a Dell laptop that does not have great sound but at least you can understand the sound coming out of the speakers. Is this a function of the sound card or speakers or both. It just seems that there can be something done to hear the thing with less than great sound yet somehow improve without having to attach external speakers or head phones both of which I do have but wires, wires, wires and more to carry.
