Mounting noises

My computer keeps making the mounting then un-mounting soud. IOW it thinks I'm plugging something into the USB and then removing it. It started after I used my old external hard drive to back up my stuff. Any ideas how to shut it up...other than mute?
New Acer. Runs Windows 7.
Reboot? Alternatively, right click Computer go to Manage and see if anything it thinks anything are in any of the ports. Disable and reenable the port.

As an aside before you go down the road laid out above, any external drive will get a letter and directory listing(except like, SCSI tape drives and stuff). That shouldn't be an issue here.
Leave the device manager open and watch for it to refresh. See what appears and disappears. Check the "event viewer" in administrative tools in the control panel, especially the system events list within and see if there's any errors.
I'm assuming you rebooted and this is still happening? Go in to the device manager and "uninstall" all the USB controllers, things listed as hubs, etc and reboot. Basically everything under "Universal serial bus controllers".
Go to the acer site on google and download the latest chipset and USB specific drivers and install them. Run windows update and click "optional" and check for any chipset/USB stuff in there.
Does this computer have a USB 3.0 port? I've had odd driver issues on a laptop involving problems like this specifically when using that port. Avoid using the drive with that port again if that was the case.

This doesn't seem like a great idea if you want to keep using things like a keyboard or mouse.

If you go into the "sound" applet in the control panel and choose the "sounds" tab, you can control which events make sounds. I think if you unselect "Device Connect", "Device Disconnect" and "Device Failed to Connect" it'll help a lot.

"Keeps making" isn't specific enough. Is it once an hour predictably etc., or does it seem random? Do you get popups that offer the "What do you want to do" option? Agree with the event viewer suggestion, but I'd look for more than just errors. IE when you hear the sound, open up the event viewer and look at the recent events.
Also agree in uninstalling the drivers... and I may be wrong but if that leaves you without keyboard/mouse functionality I think that gets reinstalled on reboot when they are detected.
Couldn't hurt to run a quick scan with something like malwarebytes either.

one4themoment: Seems to be randon. canhappen several times a minute, then not for 5 minutes. Also, ran a scan, per your suggestion. All is well.

Blow extremely hard into the socket where you plugged in the drive that started all this foolery. Could be a flake of something conductive lodged in there.

My phone plug has a little bit of wear on it, and if I knock it just slightly, it will "replug" for half a minute. It doesn't alternate, just make the plug-in noise for a good 30 seconds. At least with my phone, it pops it up on the screen when it happens.
Watching the "Device Manager" to see if anything has an "unknown driver" or keeps disappearing and reappearing is a good way to track it down.

Is it a laptop or desktop? If you step away from the computer and just listen to it does it still happen, or is it only when you're using it?

if you have a usb hub or monitor with usb ports in it, these things tend to fail in this fashion. the only fix is buying a new hub or plugging everything directly into the computer.
