Name. That. PUPPY!
May 15, 2013 4:30 PM   Subscribe

So, new-to-me pound hound, red heeler mix with golden eyes. She needs a name.

MeFites are good at this, so please help me name her.

As an adoptee, they know nothing about her at the pound, other than they said she is picky about her people. She's still a pup--probably under a year. Weighs about 35lbs and stands about 20in high. Apparently she's potty trained in several ways: both housebroken and including knowing how to drink out of the toilet (ick!) so I think she's been someone's pet. She's less than a year old and very, VERY active. I don't know how they got a picture of her to post on the adoption website. Loves Frisbee and squeaker toys. Right now she's working on a peanut butter kong next to me--otherwise she'd be zooming around the house.

Blue. Australians used to nickname redheads "Blue", we are a simple people and easily amused, and well cattle dogs are Australian.

Whatever you decide to call her, she is a beautiful dog.

her dog smile looks a bit like Martha from the children's book Martha Speaks. It's a dog name with a lot of mileage since Paul McCartney also named his that. (And it comes with a Beatles song.)

Another Australian chiming in with 'Blue' - it's what we call red-haired people, and red heelers/kelpies. And you know, you have a red kelpie on your hands there.

[Make sure she has a job to do in life if you want to channel her natural high energy. These wonderful animals wish to follow commands and work hard for you - that's what they thrive on and love.]

But I also have to say "Stella" is my go-to name for female dogs. Then you can bellow 'Stellaaaaaa' like Marlon Brando across the dog park during frisbee time.

Shirley, after Anne Shirley from Anne of Green Gables, one of the most famous redheads I know. "Anne" doesn't seem quite right for a dog (and she HATED being called "Annie" or I'd suggest that!) but Shirley seems to suit this one.

(For the record, I also REALLY like the suggestion of "Pippi.")

Response by poster: We have a winner thanks to islander.

This pup's name is Spice aka Spicy, Spice-girl, Spacy-Spice, Spice-a-rony.

She's going to be something special. She's a wiggly smart little perpetual motion machine with overflowing kisses.

Many thanks to all

Some reasons I didn't pick other names were because they were names of my previous doggies: Blue (a BLUE* heeler), Paprika, Lucy, Daisy, Iris, Pippi.

Other name belong to good doggies we know: Pepper, Nutmeg, Cinnamon, Honey, Goldie, Ruby, Rosy, Red.

Boy names just didn't fit this petite little girly-girl.

Jimjam, that dingo picture is the spitting image of her! Maybe she is dingo and not heeler, or at least has some dingo in her. There is a ranch around here that raises dingos, but their puppies go for big buck$. Never know, maybe one of their boys went a' roaming.

*Blue, for a red dog? You Down Unders are really strange. Must be all that hot sun and barbie sauce.

Thank you everyone who participated in this round of Name. That. Puppy!
