Please reccomend me youtube videos of rare and amazing sports moments
April 19, 2013 8:05 PM
I've seen all the top standard random compilations of amazing sports moments, so please send me some specific amazing plays off the top of your head, or amazing sports videos, or highlights you can find (I estimate I've seen 80% of the most popular 20%)
Bonus goes for those where someone for some reason is forced to do something unconventional, like 1 handed, barehanded, or barely keep toes in bounds, or fall out of bounds and come back in bounds, or other heads up, awareness plays.

Also, if you haven't seen the fast 147 from the snooker post on the front page of MetaFilter, that could lead you down a fairly satisfying y-hole of Ronnie O'Sullivan clips.

Because most sports footage is tightly controlled by the rights holders, I'd say you'll have better luck buying DVDs from Amazon than looking on YouTube.

Maybe you'll find something new in this search for NBA circus shot videos.
This isn't a pro play, but it's a personal favorite of mine because I was there and it was amazing: the backwards, over-the-head basket made from half-court by a fan at half-time at a Clippers game.

I'm going to guess you've seen stuff like the Immaculate Reception, The Helmet Catch, and famous stuff of that ilk, so here's a few less well-known ones (though not exactly "rare"):

- Japanese baseball: Masato Akamatsu makes SpiderMan like catch after climbing up outfield wall
- NBA: Rex Chapman 1997 playoffs Phoenix Suns running 3 pointer vs Seattle Supersonics
- Not from pro sports comp, but probably the most impressive display of athelticism that I've ever seen: Rodney Mullen 1984 Japan

UFC Middleweight champ Anderson Silva is basically a walking highlight reel of breathtaking skill, but one of his more recent master-level feats was debuting the snap front kick KO - a strike never before seriously attempted in major-league MMA, and purportedly taught him by, of all people, Steven Segal.
When the technique was next used by fellow Brazilian prodigy Lyoto Machida, he upgraded it to a flying version - the final 'No Can Defend!' victory kick from Karate Kid literally just won a fight, against an all-time great in Randy Couture no less.
Both kicks were revolutionary karate-style additions to the MMA arsenal that proved that long-range knock out blows could come in a form other than a Muay Thai roundhouse. But even if you didn't care for the nuanced ramifications for the stand-up game, you had to WTF at seeing two fights mimic the endings of '80s movies.

Diego Maradona's "Goal of the Century." The commentary by Victor Hugo Morales is also justly famous. A translation:
…passes the ball to Diego, now Maradona with the ball, two people on him,
Maradona touches the ball, the genius of soccer heads to the right, and
leaves the third and passes to Burruchaga…
Always Maradona! Genius! Genius! Genius! ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta…
GOAL!! GOAL!!!
I am going to cry! Oh, my God! How beautiful soccer is! What a goal! Diego! Maradona!
I am crying, forgive me please….
Maradona, with a memorable run, with the most beautiful play of all time….
cosmic podge…. which planet are you from? You let it seem so easy,
and the whole country is a closed fist, is screaming for Argentina…
Argentina 2 – England 0…
Diegoal, Diegoal, Diego Armando Maradona…
Thank God, for soccer, for Maradona, for these tears, for this
Argentina 2 – England 0….

This is something I am 99% sure you WON'T have seen - and it's one of the most extraordianary and lyrically beautiful sports clips on Youtube.
With an Eric Satie soundtrack, it features, at first, domestic scenes from the British Raj, before switching to a 1930s Indian hockey match. But this isn't just any match, and these aren't just any players -
- because the scene then switches to the 1936 Berlin Olympics, and when the Indian team come up against the side from Nazi Germany..
...they look like men from the future, and it's glorious.

It probably helps to be, or have been, a squash player to appreciate the audacious beauty of this dummy, but hopefully not. There's a slow-mo replay at the end. Brings a tear to the eye of this ex-squash player.

If you go to YouTube and search for "people are awesome", there are a bunch of videos of mostly amateur athletes doing amazing things. Granted, there is usually no context whatsoever, so you don't know who they are or where they are doing that outside loop on their BMX bike, but they are pretty impressive nonetheless.

Maybe this is outside the purview of the question, as it is more bizarre than amazing, but it just happened last night: Jean Segura of the Milwaukee Brewers steals second base, then...steals first base.

TSN, the Canadian sports network, has a lot of Top 10 compilations on YouTube. They include some of the classics you've no doubt seen, but there's a lot of stuff there.
Top 10 curling shots from the Roar of the Rings (Canadian qualifying tournament for the 2010 Olympics)
Top 10 creative stickwork hockey goals (the one at the end is outstanding)
Top 10 CFL plays of 2010
And there's lots more lists along those lines.
