Web resources for current events?

"What's a good source for quality, real time analysis of current events?"

I like the discussion that members of MetaFilter have about current events. But not every subject fits in MetaFilter's format. Where do you find smart and informed coverage of current event? Bonus points for a site with good user comments/discussions.

A similar question was asked here two years ago, but two years is a long time on the Web.(Question motivated by this MetaTalk comment.)

Debate and Discussion over on Something Awful isn't bad, if you don't mind the whole Goon community style and $10 signup fee.

The Guardian liveblogs a lot of world events as they unfold. I'm American and I turn to them for coverage on a lot of things, especially American politics.

It's a bit of a firehose, but Quartz stays on top of things aggressively. There's an Economist-ish mildly pro-business tone, but it's not overwhelming.

The Financial Times has great coverage and op-eds about global events and politics. Free registration and you get ten free articles a month. I also like to follow Longreads, The Morning News, The Browser and similar things, which will filter for the good articles on the web. Often you'll see the same article linked across multiple sites, which is an indicator of a great article.

I too have been looking for a place that has good discussion like Metafilter does, so I'll be following this thread closely. People always mention the Something Awful forums but when I go over there I see threads with comment numbers in the thousands to the tens of thousands. Given that I like to read all the comments in the thread so I can follow it closely, that seems kind of overwhelming to me to a) catch up in existing threads and b) keep up in new threads

So basically, it seems that I've found places that have good comments but hardly any people visit the site so a great discussion can't get started or there are so many people that there are 20,000 comments. I would love to find something in the middle (other than Metafilter).
