Teenage Girl Filter: Working on planning a semi-formal Sweet Sixteen party for a teenage girl. Are there any good sources for party ideas? Theme ideas? Gift Ideas? We need help getting into the mind of a highschool girl to through a "cool" party.

Have you watched "Sweet Sixteen" on MTV? Obviously you probably don't want to have something as extravagant as the parties on the show but it might give you some ideas to work with.

Why don't you ask the birthday girl what she'd like? Aside from that, call reception halls, DJ's, florists, etc. and ask for suggestions. They've worked plenty of sweet 16s and will be able to point you in the right direction.

Response by poster: MTV, not realistic. We're not loaded.

And as for the places to ask, we've thought of asking for suggestions at all those places too. Thanks. I was asking if MeFi had some better ideas.

Whats the matter. Nobody is a super blogger about Sweet Sixteens? lol

Craftster has a load of sweet sixteen threads in its party planning section. Here is one for example.

I would suggest a scavenger hunt or a makeover party with nifty samples.

Response by poster: Great source. I think its going to be more of a rent a hall and Dj with 80 friends and family type thing. But I'm open for ideas.

Hmmm...the kids seem to be all about the 80's today. Maybe that would work as a theme.

I threw a faux Sweet Sixteen b-day for my boyfriend and a friend of ours this summer... only they were turning "twenty-sixteen" and "twenty-thirteen" ... maybe these photos will help for some inspiration?

Also, I have a TON of left over supplies that I've tried to sell on eBay. I'm leaving the country, so I have to get rid of them. Want them?

You can have an 80s party. A lot of overpriced Japanese electronics, cocaine, hire some yuppies, it'd be fun.

Get a DJ but a 16 year old is not cool enough to want a real DJ, so make sure they have a good selection of the latest bleeding edge music and make sure they are cool with being a human playlist (read: don't bitch about requests).

Let's see, perfect party as a teenager -- no parents, alcohol and drugs. The food and everything is just lame. Rent a hall and stay away. If they're smart they'll be sneaky and you'll never know anything bad happened! It'll be a great time and you won't have to be an evil alcohol, drug providing parent. Just the normal hands-off kind.

PS The best parties I went to were at country clubs. They were posh and made us feel sophisticated. Is this a possibility?

Seconding the vote to ask the girl herself what she likes.

My 16th was made very sweet when I was sung to live on air on an international music TV station. (OK, so it helped that I had befriended the TV crew, but that would be a fun addition if you can pull it off - perhaps get her favourite radio DJ to read an announcement?)
