Why when I create a new email and type in the message body ... it turns into a thick vertical line?

Have you done the Office updates? They sure have made a lot of improvements...

This is not something that is broken it is obviously a feature that can be turned off somewhere. It like some type of keyboard shortcut to that symbol.

Are you using Word as your email editor ? If so, shut that off, it causes all sorts of headaches.

Do you mean when you type "..."? Try Tools > Auto Correct Options. It could be trying to replace ... with a single ellipsis font glyph. In the options dialog you can control what bits of text it replaces with other stuff. If you are missing the glyph it might appear as a box.
