Finding a last-minute hotel in Phuket/Thailand

Our hotel reservation for the week of New Year's Eve in Phuket, Thailand just got cancelled... #argh! Where would you look for mid-to-high-end hotels with prices that are still reasonable, one month away from the busiest time of the year in Thailand?

Prices are sooaaaring everywhere we've looked: Lastminute.com, Tripadvisor.com and the usual Hotels.com. Is there any lesser-known gem we should know of to find a good deal? Thanks!

wotif.com is Australian based, but seems to have a good selection in Phuket around New Years.

I don´t know if you would consider this - not a resort , great spa, Sino House - it´s down town and you can get good cheap car hire for daytrips to beach or to just explore. Its very confortable and reasonably priced.

Would you consider a luxury apartment or house instead? A friend just hired an amazing place (private pool and all!) through airbnb - this and this are both available, for example.

Response by poster: Thanks a lot for all your help! We're ending up in the Coconut Village Island Hotel on Ko Maphrao, a tiny 'sub-island' 2 minutes off Phuket's East coast. It looks really nice.

Enjoy the end of 2012 in style!
