What was the first official announcement that Joe Biden would be Obama's 2012 vice-presidential running mate?

Response by poster: To clarify, I'm asking about 2012, not 2008.

There was never an official announcement per se. President Obama recently marked the 4 year anniversary of his vp pick with a personal tweet, but that's as close as I think they've come to an announcement.

The official official announcement comes at the convention this week with his nomination for VP.

Vice President Joe Biden announced on Wednesday he would be President Barack Obama's running mate on the 2012 presidential ticket. Biden made the announcement on NBC's "Today" show when it was suggested that there were questions about whether the vice president would be on the ticket for Obama's reelection campaign. -- Politico, 10/12/11

I don't think there was a formal announcement, and that's practically the only story about that casual confirmation that I found.

The official official announcement comes at the convention this week with his nomination for VP.

Technically, it comes when papers are filed for the first primary or caucus to require them. I voted for Obama-Biden last spring.

What primary or caucus has ever required a VP line? Those were all done well before Romney picked Ryan.
