Ich Mochte Mozartkugeln!

I recently rekindled my love affair with Austrian Mozartkugeln (particularly the "Hofbauer Confiserie Mozartkugeln im Milch-Schokolade"). I know this is a long shot, but does anyone have any idea where I can get some in Toronto? Or have it shipped to me from somewhere other than Austria?

Google is a mess of German and suspicious online shops when I look it up. Failing that, does anyone know where I can get some good marzipan in Toronto? And not that fruit or animal shaped garbage that they seem to have everywhere. Thanks!

You can get them through Amazon.

Searching the web for Mozart Kugel or Mozart Balls might yield better results than using the full German name.

Response by poster: Good tip, I didn't even think of splitting up the word. Sadly though, Amazon.com does not ship to Canada, and Amazon.ca is but a pale imitation and does not carry it. Most of the other online vendors don't seem to ship to Canada either, and seem ridiculously expensive. No local marzipan lovers?

loquax, check your german delis in downtown TO. Maybe Lawrence Street? I know that I can find this stuff in Vancouver, no problems (reminds me of my days in Stutgartt...)

Best answer: I think I remember seeing them at G's Fine Foods, on the corner of Bloor and Huron (1 block east of Spadina).

Response by poster: I'll try G's tomorrow, thanks! It would have never crossed my mind to look out for them there. I've been going there for the last 15 years, it'll blow my mind if they've been right under my nose the whole time. I don't know of any German delis, but all of the chocolate shops downtown seem to be devoid of the stuff, and have only weak imitation marzipan instead.

Yeah, they've got some interesting stuff there. I don't know if it was seasonal or not, or maybe just a one-shot deal, but it's worth checking.

loquax: You seem to have gotten some local sources for your current nosh desire, but for other needs/wants, you can consider Borderfree, and other similar sites. They are useful if you just have to have it from the States, and don't have a friend or relative to do this cross-shipping for you. I've used them before, they're a tad expensive, but when I can't convince my brother to receive and then ship something for me, it's nice to have an alternative.

Best answer: OK, I know the difference between Austria and Germany, but you might try the stores listed here:

Apparently there's a place on Pape. There's a lot of Polish stores on Roncevalles Ave and there's a German(ish) gift store on the north end of the street, "Old Country Shop" at 335 Roncesvalles Ave. They have lots of German chocolates there at Christmas and they might have Mozartkugeln year-round. And if they don't, cheer yourself up at the Queen of Tarts down at Roncesvalles & High Park.
