Ehrlichia tests?

Any advice or experience with Ehrlichia in dogs?
I have cause to believe that my dog has an ehrlichia infection (ehrlichiosis?). She had all the relevant tests at the vet yesterday, but they were inconclusive as to what is wrong with her.
I took her to the vet after a day of diarrhea and then she couldn't get up on her own the next morning. The vet said her joints (all four leg joints) were very swollen.
The Ehrlichia test was weakly positive and her platelet counts were very low. She is currently on Doxycycline (400mg a day). The suggestion from the vet was that she would try that for 3-5 days and see if our dog gets better.
I'm wondering if we should insist on a more in-depth ehrlichia test battery or if there are specific things we should be looking for as she takes the antibiotics. I don't want this to resolve itself as immune-mediated polyarthritis and have her on steroids for the rest of her life.
