limited user account b0rks iTunes

Why does iTunes not show the contents of an audio CD when run from a limited user account under Windows XP?

I've set up a friend's XP box with a single Admin account and a bunch of limited accounts for day-to-day use. This works well (and their computer has stayed nice and clean for months) but it seems to have broken iTunes.

From any limited account: when an audio disc is in the drive and the drive is double-clicked under My Computer, iTunes starts but doesn't show the disc contents, only the existing music library. Same thing happens if iTunes is already running and a disc is inserted.

From the admin account: all works perfectly.

Has anybody else fixed this behavior? If so, can you tell me how you found out what to do?

It sounds as if the GraceNotes cddb website is not visible to the limited user account.

This can be caused by
- Gracenotes website has been blocked. Look in Internet explorer for a list of blocked stes.
- iTunes triggered the software firewall, and the user chose "never allow access from this program" Reconfigure the firewall to allow iTunes access.

This doesn't help too much, but should give you an idea where to start.

Response by poster: Thanks, I'll give that a try.

I hadn't thought of the firewall because I wasn't seeing the usual "Windows Firewall has blocked some features of this program" nag, but I guess that might have been turned off.

Does iTunes truly refuse to show tracks at all if it can't figure out what to call them? It doesn't have a "track 01...track nn" default? I'd hate to have to file anything from Apple in the bdpos bucket :)

No, flabdablet. When it can't access the internet (or can't find the corresponding entry in the cddb) it shows Track01 - Tracknn.

About the other, check also that under iTunes' general preferences "connect to internet when needed" is checked. As for not getting a song list at all, maybe change the option to On CD insert: "show songs," if that's not currently selected? Beyond that, I have no clue.

Response by poster: On CD insert: show songs is indeed selected, and there's no sign of Track01 - Tracknn, or of the disc itself, so I suspect this is something more than a cddb failure.

Might be time for some serious detective work with Filemon and Regmon. Heigh ho.

Oh. Another idea. If you have autoplay turned off on your windows box, you may have to refresh your "my computer" view of the various drives, then refresh your desktop also before iTunes figures out that there's a CD in and it should query the database. Especially if you have iTunes open already it might just go on about its business without displaying the CD's tracks.

I've no idea if this is the cause of this particular quirk though.

Response by poster: Thanks for that tip, Tuwa. I do believe I remember hearing something about Autoplay being off for some obscure gaming reason.

Do you think it's plausible that iTunes would still misbehave for that reason when started by double-clicking the CD icon under My Computer? Because it does :(

I'll visit the box again in the next few days and try out all your helpful suggestions.

Can't help, but I'll say that I have the same problem. My roommate has a limited account on my computer and the CD never shows up in the sources list when she puts one in. It works fine for me with my admin account. So definitely post back if you find the solution.
