Where (UK) can I buy mens' boots / shoes that look like this but don't cost £400? Pictured shoes are in Ede & Ravenscroft, Cambridge.

Much less formal (crepe sole, higher boot), but Clarks desert boots are vaguely similar.

Clarks desert boots?

Thirding Clarks, who have a new style of desert bole that has a lighter sole and as very similar to those.

The Loake Kempton and the Loake Pimlico are fairly similar. They're not cheap-cheap, but they're made in the UK. I've got a couple of pairs of UK-made Loakes and they're perfectly good. (Their cheaper range are made to a much lower standard in India or somewhere - not that no one in India can produce fine shoes, but that's not what Loake is doing with their overseas factory.)

You might also check Ebay - Loake and Grenson both make mid-priced chukka boots and they pop up on Ebay.uk periodically at a good discount.

Also, if Allen Edmonds distributes over there, they make a nice chukka boot.

The Clarks are also perfectly nice but don't have a lot of arch support and are - as has been pointed out - not a formal shoe, thus will look better with the more casual sort of pants, while you could probably sneak the Ede & Ravenscroft ones in with a country suit or some vigorous flannels.

The Allan Edmonds model Frowner mentioned is the Malvern. Made in the USA, but don't know about UK availability. Probably in the same price range as the Loakes.

These Doc Martens look pretty much what you're looking for - though at £120 they a wee bit more expensive than some other options upthread.

There's a not-dissimilar pair at M&S.
