How do they make older 2D movies into 3D?

So I've heard announcements that they are releasing both Titanic and Jurassic Park in 3D. I understand how they can go back and re-render all of the computer animation in 3D, what I don't understand is how they can go back and 3D-ize the live action stuff - actors and scenery.

Does anyone have inside knowledge of how this is done? Is it just piles and piles of people doing tons of cropping and editing, or is there some sort of method to it? (method is not the world I'm looking for...and it's driving me crazy that I can't think of the word...sort of a computer method, sort of like a formula...blargh)

Can't tell you how it works, but "algorithm" is probably the word you were looking for.
