Pretzels and Pirhanas

Help us identify an illustrated children's book involving people on a ship, the invention of pretzels, and piranhas - probably from the late 70s or early 80s.

My brother and I loved this book - we had it in the early-to-mid-80s.

The captain of the ship (or the cook?) may have been named "Pretzel" and he may have been surly. They invented pretzels when the normal bread dough fell into the salt water by accident. The ship spent some time on the Amazon River. There was more story to the book, but that's all the details we can remember right now.

The book was for children around age 5-7 and the illustrations were in very basic color.
