yum, drinking tea with a dormouse

I am desperately trying to remember a song from a mix-tape around 1996 that involved a male singing in a quiet, resigned, almost-verging-on-happy-about-giving-up tone about how he was going to just stay inside and live his do-nothing life in his crappy run-down home and drink tea with a dormouse. Something to that effect. Minimalist sound, kind of plinky and plonky.

Any ideas? Maybe it is ultra-obvious, but I am getting nowhere in my own searches.

Sounds to me just like Blind Melon - No Rain (no link because I'm on my somewhat clunky phone)

Here's the link, its actually dated 1991, so it might be too early for you. Love it! Blind Melon - No Rain

Response by poster: The song was very slow, melancholic, surreal-sounding, almost-underwater-quality. The Skeleton Key idea was the only one that came close, but the vocals on the song I am remembering were smooth and low, not gruff. The person who gave me the mix was extremely music-savvy, so it might be pretty esoteric. Thanks for the guesses so far.
