What does "Hope me" mean?

Evidently I am way behind the times. I see posting stating: "Hope Me" which appears to mean "help me." What is it with this? I am just really curious and see no reason for using such a term.

This will help with other in-jokes you'll see around here.

It's one of MetaFilter's oldest in-jokes.

Best answer: How weird... for years I had taken it for granted that it was a Star Wars reference (Princess Leia calling for help) but thinking more carefully I must have conflated "Help me [Obi Wan Kenobi, you're my only] hope". Weird.

I feel like I've seen it other places ... To me it's "help me" with a dash of oh dear I may be beyond hope.
