Trying to trace a YA book involving dog aliens vs cat aliens, and mould as a weapon

I read this YA book in the mid 1980s but I have no clue it was first published. I think it was originally published in English so wasn't a translated edition. The main character is a teenage boy. He owns a smallish species of dog (terrier??) Somehow he becomes the prisoner of an alien race who resemble dogs. An alien race which look like humanoid cats also feature.  The boy is taken to the canine alien race spaceship and they question him, then infect him with some kind of mould/disease, but he escapes, I think with the help of the cats

There may also have been a subplot involving a stash of weapons underground
which was what the dogs wanted all along.

I have vaugue recollections of the main character being Captain of the school football team, because I think his letter jacket is used as a clue when he dissapears and people search for him.

This has bugged me for *years* and various google searches have always failed me.

A similar request was posted to Www.whatwasthatbook.com in 2008, but as yet remains unaswered. That post contained things I don't remember about the book, but might help someone else identify it :

I read this in the mid 90s but I don't know what era it was published.
The main character is a teenage boy who lives in the english countryside.
He is being followed by a large dog-like creature which turn out to be
from an alien race. There is also an alien race of cats. The boy somehow
ends up with a box of eggs which contain different kinds of potions and
the dog creatures want the eggs. They capture the boy and take him to
their spaceship and infect him with some kind of mould/disease, but he
escapes, I think with the help of the cats.
I think there was also something to do with a stash of weapons underground
which was what the dogs wanted all along."

So does this sound like anything any mefites also read? I do hope so!

Best answer: Ohhh.......could it be Urn Burial? 1987. I've read it - the boy and a mailman are take to the ship, where the mailman is infected with a fungus. Wiki link. A description. Amazon link with description and reviews.

"It is about a boy who discovers a cat-like being's body buried in a cairn with many mysterious objects, but gets more than he bargained for when an alien race, much resembling dogs, pays earth a visit hoping to find a the cat-thing after detecting the radition from an egg buried with the cat. "

omg, this sounds shockingly like (one of the worst movies ever made) time walker. only with fewer co-eds being stalked by mummies. there's a buried alien with artifacts, people being infected by (radioactive) mold, alien abductions &c. ...i call plagiarism.

Definitely Urn Burial. I read it very recently and remember the entire plot matching your description.
