bird shitting in water bowl (coprophiliac?)

Got a parakeet recently, and for the past few days he's been hovering over his water bowl at all times, going to the bathroom in it.

I clean it out regularly as a result. But even then, I'm not sure why he'd keep doing it, seeing as how he's still drinking from the bowl. Any ideas concerning this behavior?

Best answer: Um, birds aren't very smart?

You need to get a covered water bowl.

Best answer: Yeah, birds will do that. Theres's nothing wrong with him, you just have to get a covered one like MrMoonPie said. Or move his perches.

As folks with a swimming pool can probably tell you, many wild birds crap/drop their young's crap in water as a way to hide the fact that they are nesting in the area. Instead of having piles of poop below the nest, it is washed away, leaving no hint to predetors as to their location. No idea if your bird is doing this or not, but some birds are.
