PVD to Boston MBTA filter: Does the Inbound Providence / Stoughton line stop at Ruggles Station the first time--or is it true you have to loop around before they let you off?

I'm trying to get from Providence to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and from the MBTA Trip Advisor, it looks like the train goes through Ruggles without stopping and forces you have to go to South Station and then turn around and head back to Ruggles before they let you off. Weird.

Is this true?

It depends on the day of the week. The Providence-Stoughton line schedule is here: Weekday inbound never stops at Ruggles, but Saturday & Sunday inbound usually does.

According to the schedule you don't have to go all the way in to South Station; you can get off at Back Bay. So the best way to do this might be to get off the train at Back Bay, change to the Orange Line, and head back out to Ruggles that way. This is almost surely faster than going all the way in to South Station and either taking the next commuter train back out; it is surely faster than going to South Station and taking the Red Line to the Orange Line.

Yes, temporarily. Amtrak is replacing ties in the area which takes one track out of service at a time. To avoid congestion during rush hour, all Providence trains skip Ruggles inbound. You would need to get off at Back Bay and take the Orange Line to Ruggles. I am pretty sure that the T will comp you a subway ticket for this purpose.

However, if you are forced to get off at Back Bay, you can simply walk to Copley Square and take the E branch of the Green Line directly to the MFA.

Info from the T about the project is found here.

Don't miss the temporary schedule they put in place, thanks to the reconstruction!
